Each skill can be upgraded up to four times (roughly translated: basic → schooled → senior → super → final) either by scrolls that can be found in chests or by solving sidequests. New skills are unlocked automatically as the story progresses. This will save you some micromanagement since every character will get at least one support aura later on and you will really want them to keep those up at all times. More importantly, you can put defensive skills on auto cast too by holding shift and right click on them.
